Dave Muise Hits 1,000 golf balls to raise money for blood cancer patients in Atlantic
When most people are asked to fundraise they tend to cringe at the thought of it. Asking other’s for money is a difficult task. So attempting to raise $2,500 would send most people running for the hills. But when the Atlantic Chapter of the LLSC approached David Muise of Sun Life Financial, Nova Scotia East to be part of the Team In Training Power team, he did the exact opposite.
Dave jumped right on board to be part of the Power Team for the Scotiabank Bluenose Marathon in May of 2016. “I want to do something a little different to gain awareness and help raise funds. I really want to push myself further this year after doing the 5k last year.” That something different was to hit 1,000 golf balls, each representing a cancer patient and their battle. Having already agreed to run the 10k at the Bluenose, topping it off with another athletic feat in honour of cancer patients was truly admirable.
Dave’s idea was so well received that his company Sun Life Financial Nova Scotia East also came on board to support him and the LLSC. In addition to their support of Dave and this campaign, they became our presenting sponsor for the 7th Annual BJ’s Links Fore Lymphoma Golf Tournament (Presented by Sun Life Financial Nova Scotia East) hosted by local radio station Q104FM every summer. In 2015 this event raised $38,000+ and is on pace to exceed last year’s numbers with the newly founded partnership.
On June 17th at Brunello Golf Course, over the span of 3+ hours, Dave Muise proceeded to hit one golf ball after another. Each swing thinking of a patient in the hospital or who has passed away. With shoulder pain developing and blisters on his hands Dave continued to hit ball after ball, not willing to give in to how easy it would be to simply pack up and call it a day.
After all was said and done Dave had not only ran a 10k for cancer patients but hit every last golf ball for his event. A remarkable and respectable achievement which was able to generate over $9,100 for the LLSC through the Team In Training Power Team. These two powerful events have resonated with Dave and we look forward to seeing him and the Sun Life team at Links Fore Lymphoma on July 8th and the Light The Night Walk on October 15th.
